Artist's Statement

The boats are made with flexible stems  and I used a jig on which to construct the frame.  The interior of the boats are materials collected on my walks in the woods and the beaches of Lummi Island.

When I first started making these suspensions I was primarily unraveling fabric.  As things progressed I began using collected natural  materials.  The grouping for my show is about half and half.  Natural materials are my current direction.  I carry scissors in my car and whenever I notice interesting flowers or branches I snip them and bring them to the studio to cover with silica gel crystals.  This dehydrates the materials and often they retain their original coloration.  I then choose an embroidery hoop on which to fasten them.  When this is accomplished I then choose a suitable specimen to hang as the centerpiece, To be seen through the exterior hangings.  I hope you will enjoy the work, as I enjoyed making it.
