BIRD SONG

i.e. welcomes Elizabeth Sandvig for a solo show of her depictions of birds and their songs, via sonogram, in paintings, monoprints and ceramics. Sandvig has explored the use of sonograms, the graphic visualization of sound, over the years.

"I am a painter who has been interested in birds and their voices for a long time.  I live in an area inhabited by many birds and before the recordings of their songs became easily available, I wanted to show the song in a visual manner.  After abstract marks or the calligraphy of different languages, I began to use the sonogram, the electronic record, as a more direct version of the song and a visual counterpoint to the more painterly depiction of the bird. I enjoy the effort to make images and ideas come together by seeking the best combination of my hand and my mind." - Elizabeth Sandvig
