DAVID GRANT BEST
DREAMING THE SALISH SEA
i.e. is thrilled to be showing photography by David Grant Best for his first solo exhibit with us. An Anacortes photographer, Best is known for his black and white composed images of the natural environment and rural communities. In this exhibit he shares his exquisite, often haunting images of light, mist and waves on our local beloved waters.
The Salish Sea is one of the world’s largest and biologically rich inland seas. Its name pays tribute to the first inhabitants of the region, the Coast Salish. It encompasses Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the waters off of Vancouver, BC. The area spans from Olympia, Washington in the south to the Campbell River, British Columbia in the north, and west to Neah Bay and includes the large cities of Seattle and Vancouver. Best has focused the locations for this body of work closer to home around the Deception Pass and Washington Park areas. The "Dreaming" in the title is expressed through the other worldly and often transcendent images that appear to be beyond our realm.
Best's work has appeared in many publications and exhibitions and is in the collections of Whatcom Museum, Portlan Art Museum, United States Library of Congress, Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and more.

Dreaming the Salish Sea
"In these photographic images I endeavor to capture dreamlike elements encountered at the edge of the sea. Can certain fleeting moments between consciousness and dreams be captured? With illusive impressions one ponders fantasy and reality. Which motifs are real and which illusions?"
